Paxlovid, the first oral medicine for the treatment of Covid-19 infection has been approved for use in Singapore.
Currently, 2 of our GP clinics have joined the pilot programme to prescribe Paxlovid for eligible Covid-19 patients:
Who is eligible for Paxlovid?
COVID-19 patients who meet certain criteria such as patients who are aged 18 years and older, present within five days of illness, and are at risk of developing severe disease, such as those who have active cancer, serious heart conditions, or are on ongoing immunosuppressive condition or treatment.
How effective is the drug?
Clinical trial data had shown that Paxlovid was able to reduce the risk of Covid-19-related hospitalisation or death by 88.9% when given within three days of the onset of symptoms, and 87.8% when given within five days of symptoms onset.
Are there any side effects?
- Increase in blood pressure
- Change of taste
- Muscle aches
- Liver problems (symptoms may include: yellowing skin or the white of your eyes, dark-colored urine, abdominal pain)
*These may not be all the possible side effects of PAXLOVID as it is still being studied. It is possible that all of the risks are not known at this time.
