What is Myofascial Pain Syndrome?

Myofascial Pain Syndrome is a chronic pain disorder that affects the muscles and fascia. People with this condition may feel pain and tenderness in muscles in certain areas of the body. This pain and tenderness are often related to one or more “trigger points.” These trigger points feel like small bumps, nodules or knots in your muscle.

What Are The Symptoms of Myofascial Pain Syndrome?

Myofascial pain syndrome is characterized by persistent or long-lasting muscle pain in areas such as the low back, neck, shoulders, and chest. Pressing a trigger point may cause you to feel the pain or cause the pain to become worse. Other symptoms of myofascial pain syndrome may include:

  • A tender or sensitive muscle
  • Muscle pain that occurs when pressure is applied to a trigger point
  • Referred pain
  • Pain that feels like aching, burning, stinging, or stabbing
  • Affected areas of the body have a reduced range of motion
  • A feeling of weakness in the affected muscle
